MEAT LOAF 
1 lb. round steak, ground
2 tbsp. melted butter
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 tbsp. chopped onion
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 c. coarsely broken crumbs
1 c. milk
1 tsp. salt
2 slices bacon

Combine all ingredients except bacon. Form in loaf. Lay slices of bacon across top and bake in moderate oven (375°F) 2 hours. If desired substitute 1/2 cup uncooked oat cereal for 1/2 cup cracker crumbs. Serve with tomato sauce (if desired). For lower sodium, use low sodium bacon, low sodium or unsalted crackers, sweet acidophilus low-fat milk. Usually about 1 hour in modern oven. Household Searchlight Recipe Book, c 1937.
