THUMBPRINT COOKIES 
1/2 c. butter, softened
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
2 eggs, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. finely chopped nuts
Red & green jelly

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix butter, shortening, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. Work in flour and salt until dough holds together. Shape dough by teaspoons into 1" balls. Dip each ball into egg whites; roll in nuts. Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet; press thumb deeply into center of each. Bake about 10 minutes or until lightly brown. Immediately remove from baking sheet; cool. Fill thumbprints with jelly. Yield: 6 dozen.
