OLD-FASHIONED SPICE COOKIES 
2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves, ground
1 c. soft vegetable shortening
1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tbsp. water
2 c. uncooked rolled oats, quick or old-fashioned
3/4 c. currants
Confectioners' sugar
Granulated sugar

1. Blend flour, salt, baking soda and spices in a bowl. Add shortening, sugars, egg and water; beat with electric mixer until smooth (about 2 minutes). Stir in oats and currants.

2. Chill dough thoroughly.

3. Roll only a small portion of chilled dough at a time to 1/8 inch thickness on a pastry canvas or board lightly sprinkled with confectioners' sugar. Cut with a floured 3 inch round cutter. Put onto ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.

4. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
