CORN BREAD 
1 c. cornmeal
1 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sour or buttermilk
1 egg
2 tbsp. melted shortening
1 heaping tsp. baking soda
3 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt

Mix and sift dry ingredients, add sour milk, beaten egg, and shortening. Beat well and pour in a well-greased shallow pan and bake about 25 minutes in a hot oven.
