DUTCHESS SPICE CAKE 
3/4 c. shortening, soft
1 1/4 c. brown sugar
1 c. white sugar
3 eggs
2 3/4 c. flour, sifted
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. buttermilk

Optional additions for Raisin Nut Spice Cake:
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped nuts
2 tbsp. extra flour

Grease and flour 2 (9 inch) pans or a 9x13. Cream together the shortening, brown sugar and white sugar until fluffy. Beat in thoroughly the eggs.

Sift together the flour, soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt. Stir in alternately with 1 1/2 cups buttermilk. Pour into prepared pans and bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes for layers OR 50 minutes for oblong pan.
