MONKEY BREAD 
1 pkg. dry yeast
1/4 c. water
1 c. milk, scalded
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. shortening
1 tsp. salt
3 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 stick butter, melted

Soften yeast in warm water. Combine milk, sugar, shortening and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Add 1 cup of flour; beat well. Beat in softened yeast and egg. Gradually beat in remaining flour to make soft dough.

Cover and let rise in warm place until double (1 1/2 - 2 hours). Turn onto floured surface. Shape into a rectangle with rolling pin. Cut into 1 inch squares. Dip squares in melted butter and drop into tube pan. Let rise, about 30 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees about 30 minutes.
