DATE FILLED SUGAR COOKIES 
4 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
4 tsp. baking powder
1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
4 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tbsp. milk

FILLING:

2 c. dates
1 c. water
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. flour
2 tsp. vanilla

Sift flour, salt and baking powder. In separate bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Add flour mixture, milk and mix well. Roll out 1/4 inch thick on floured board.

Cut with 3 inch round cutter. Put 1 teaspoon of date filling on bottom cookie. Place top round over filling, dampen edges with milk, press to seal.

Filling: Mix dates, water and sugar in a saucepan and heat until boiling. Remove and add 2 tablespoons flour and 2 teaspoons vanilla.

Bake in 350 degree oven until lightly browned.
