MUD SQUARES 
1 c. oatmeal, not instant
1 stick butter
1 3/4 c. boiling water
1 c. sugar
1 c. lightly packed brown sugar
2 lg. eggs
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 to 4 tbsp. cocoa, according to taste
1 (12 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
3/4 c. walnuts or pecans, coarsely chopped

In a large bowl, pour boiling water over oats and butter. Let stand 10 minutes. Stir in sugars and add eggs (slightly beaten).

Combine dry ingredients and add to oats mixture. Stir in half of chocolate chips. Pour batter into greased and floured 9 x 13 inch pan. Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips and nuts over cake.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Makes 24 squares.
