4 1/2 c. flour (Gold Medal) sometimes more 1 tsp. salt 1/4 c. sugar Put all together in bowl and make a well. 1 c. lukewarm water 1 tsp. sugar Baker's yeast or 2 Fleischmann's yeast Melt the yeast and sugar in 1 cup lukewarm water. Add a little flour and stir until smooth. Then add this into the first 3 ingredients. Let stand 15 minutes. Add 1 pound hard butter (cut up) after the dough has set 15 minutes. Start mixing. Do not let the butter get real soft, as you'll use too much flour. Use all the flour, 5 cups in all. Let rise until double, 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Roll into pencil strips and lay in sugar to make a small horseshoe. Pinch ends together on cookie sheet. Bake 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. To brown more, place under broiler 1 to 2 minutes. |
