ARMENIAN STYLE LENTIL SOUP 
1 c. dried split peas or lentils
1/4 c. rice
4 c. water
2 1/4 c. finely chopped onions (about 5 med. sized onions)
Oil
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1 1/2 to 2 tsp. salt

Put lentils or peas and rice in saucepan of 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Saute onions in oil and mix with lentils. Add salt and pepper. Simmer 40 to 45 minutes until lentils are soft but not mushy. Add water if necessary for proper consistency.
