NUTRITIOUS DOG BISCUITS | |
3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 3 c. whole wheat flour 2 c. oatmeal 1 c. cornmeal 1/4 c. instant dry milk 1 tsp. salt 1 c. vegetable scrapings (carrot, potato, etc.) 1 onion* 1 clove garlic* 2 c. water 2 env. dry yeast sprinkled over 1/2 c. water 1 egg, mixed with 1 tbsp. milk Place dry ingredients in large bowl; mix well. Chop scrapings, onion and garlic in blender (See note below). Cook in the 2 cups water 10 to 15 minutes. Cool slightly and add to dry mixture with yeast mixture. Mix well with hands. Dough will be very stiff. If necessary, add more water. Roll dough to 1/4" thickness. Cut into small rectangles or cut into dog biscuit shapes with a doggie cookie cutter. Brush with milk and egg mixture (Tip: Mix a crushed beef or chicken bouillon cube into the egg mixture before brushing). Bake for 45 minutes in 300 degree oven. Turn off oven and let biscuits remain in closed oven a few hours or overnight. This makes more than 11 dozen 3" x 4" biscuits. Dogs love them. Note: Some rumors are afloat that it may not be safe to feed onions to dogs. Garlic is in the same plant family as onions, so it would be a natural assumption to extend this caution to garlic, also. (Grapes, raisins and chocolate, though not in this recipe, are also on the list of foods that dogs may not be able to utilize as well as humans.) We've fed all these foods to our dogs in the past, but we didn't know any better when we did (and neither did the dogs!) We would recommend that you learn the latest news concerning this topic since the story is currently in the developing stages. To be safe rather than sorry, eliminate the onions and garlic ingredients listed above and use bouillon cubes as a flavoring substitute until you've consulted with your veterinarian for the latest information. |
