GIFT DATE - NUT BREAD 
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. boiling water
3 tbsp. butter
1 c. dates, chopped
1 c. nuts
1 tbsp. cornstarch
3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
Vegetable oil for baking can or pan

Mix soda, butter and water until butter melts. Add dates, nuts, cornstarch, sugar and vanilla. Mix well. Add flour gradually mixing well.

Generously oil a 30 ounce (tomato) can or a loaf pan. Fill can or pan 2/3 full. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes. Check for doneness by sticking a knife in the center. When it comes out clean it is done. Let it cool thoroughly before removing. Hold can upside-down and tap on bottom until it slices out. Wrap in plastic wrap with a bow on top for holiday gift giving.
