1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar, less 1 tbsp.
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
2 1/4 c. cake flour

Cream shortening and sugar together; beat in eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla. Mix in salt, and cocoa. Mix together soda and buttermilk and add flour and milk alternately, beating until well mixed. Pour into 3 greased and floured 9 inch cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Frosting with any white or buttercream frosting.
