1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. shortening
1 egg
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. baking powder
1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. vanilla

LOWER:

1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. cocoa
1/3 c. hot water
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 9" pie crust

Mix top ingredients like cake batter, creaming shortening, adding sugar and egg. Add milk and vanilla alternately with sifted dry ingredients. For lower, combine sugar and cocoa. Add hot water and vanilla; mix well. Line pie plate with pastry. Add lower first, then spoon or pour top (cake) mixture over chocolate mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 40 minutes.
