CHOCOLATE CHIP BARS 
2 c. brown sugar
2 c. flour
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
Nuts (optional)
2/3 c. chocolate chips

Blend the brown sugar, flour and shortening. Take off 1 cup of mixture and set aside. Beat the egg, add the milk, vanilla, soda and salt. Put into the crumb mixture and beat together. Put into greased jelly roll pan.

Sprinkle the 1 cup of crumbs over dough and cover with the chocolate chips and nuts (if desired). Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Drizzle with powdered sugar icing when cool or leave unfrosted.
