COCOA BROWNIES 
1/2 c. soft shortening or 1 stick butter
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2/3 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1/2 c. cocoa
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 chopped nuts

(If using self-rising flour, omit baking powder and salt).

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until well blended. Add dry ingredients and mix. Stir in nuts. Spread in well greased pan, 8 x 8 x 2 inches. Bake 30 minutes. Cool and cut into 2 inch squares. Makes approximately 16 brownies.
