DATE SQUARES 
3 c. quick oats
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
1/2 c. oil
3 tbsp. water or milk

Combine oats, flour and salt. Add oil and mix as for pie crust. Add vanilla and milk; mix. Pat thin layer in bottom of 10 x 12 inch pan. Cover with date filling (below). Use last half of mixture to cover filling. Press down. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Cut into squares. Let cool before removing from pan.

FILLING:

3 c. chopped dates
1/8 tsp. salt
2 c. water
1/2 c. nuts (optional)

Cook dates and water until mushy and soft and water is evaporated. Add salt and nuts.
