SLICE-OF-SPICE COOKIES 
1/2 c. butter, softened
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. quick cooking oats, uncooked
1/2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. ground cinnamon

Combine butter, shortening, and brown sugar; cream until light and fluffy. Add eggs, beating well; stir in vanilla.

Combine next 4 ingredients; add to creamed mixture, mixing well. Stir in oats. Chill dough for 1 hour.

Divide dough into 3 portions, and shape each into a 12 inch roll. Carefully wrap each roll in waxed paper, and place on a cookie sheet. Chill 4 to 5 hours.

Combine sugar and cinnamon, mixing well. Unwrap rolls, and cut into 1/4 inch slices. Dip each slice in cinnamon mixture, and place on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Yield: about 8 dozen.
