I'm a great grandmother and have made this recipe for my kids when they were at home (I can't now because they live in different states). Another taste variation is to add chow mein noodles. Use how ever many you would like. Also any nuts work.

These were amazing. I added a dash of salt before it started boiling, not sure if it made a big difference but the cookies were good

I've been making these for 40 years now, but I use 1 cup peanut butter. We fondly refer to these as "Fart Cookies." And it's not just my family!!!!

When I was in elementary school, they had these cookies for lunch. They were thin as paper. I don't know how they got them off the sheet. Nevertheless they were awesome, have been a favorite of mine since a small girl.

This is gluten free! But remember to make sure the oat's weren't manufactured on machines which produce other gluten products :)

I love reading all the different options on the ways you can make these so I thought I would add my own. When I went to pull the ingredients to make this recipe I realized all I had was dark chocolate cocoa. My daughter wasn't too thrilled with the idea, but everyone LOVED them. I personally LOVE dark chocolate and will make them this way every time from now on. I did cut back on the amount of cocoa a bit & add a bit more oatmeal. I do think next time I will cut back a bit on the butter, they are just a bit greasy in texture for my preference.

I added 1/2 cup each of chocolate chips and salted peanuts.
Pure joy for the chocolate and salt cravings.

This was the first recipe I ever used in Home Economics in high school in 1961. Only difference was that we did not add peanut butter and when cool, rolled into balls and covered in powdered sugar.

 Max Mitchell (Alabama) says:
So easy to make and so hard to stop eating them. Wonderful for a modern mother's life - great time saver. Great snack. And of course oatmeal is a very healthy food. A bit of sugar and coco have long been mom's best friend for children who otherwise might not want to eat hot cereals.

I also just discovered if you "accidently" poor the peanut butter in with the boiling ingredients and boil for 3 minutes they turn out just fine to. Whew!
