DATE NUT LOAF 
1 c. boiling water
1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Pour boiling water over dates and baking soda; let stand while mixing the cake. Cream sugar and butter. Add beaten egg and vanilla. Add sifted flour, baking powder and salt. Fold in nuts, add date mixture. Stir well. Bake in greased loaf pan at 350 degrees until done.

While cake is still warm, spread with icing made by boiling for 3 minutes:

5 tbsp. brown sugar
5 tbsp. cream
2 tbsp. butter

Add 1/4 cup of chopped nuts and 1/4 cup flake coconut and spread on top of the loaf cake.
