FRENCH BARS 
2 c. brown sugar
3 c. sifted flour
1 c. hot water with
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. baking powder
2 eggs
1 c. melted shortening (like Wesson oil)
1 c. raisins and-or nuts

Put all ingredients in a bowl. Do not stir until all ingredients are added. Bake on a large greased and floured cookie sheet (10 1/2 x 15). Bake in 375 degree oven for 20 minutes. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top or frost with powdered sugar frosting. Cut into squares.
