PLAIN CAKE 
1/4 c. shortening
1 egg
1 c. milk
3 tbsp. baking powder
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream shortening, add sugar, slowly add well beaten egg, and add vanilla. Sift flour and baking powder together, add salt and add to the other mixture a little at a time, alternating with milk. Bake in greased pan in moderate oven. May also be used with cottage pudding while hot.
