I made this last year for our church Thanksgiving potluck and it was a huge hit. We've since moved to a town 2 hours away and one of the families wants them again so bad, they've invited my family and I (including our dogs) to stay with them! My only hang up I had last year was they seemed too wet so i'll be draining all of the liquid this year..

I used to use canned yams for years. Then one year thought I'd try fresh ones. What a huge difference! It's like canned tomatoes vs fresh ones. It's really worth the extra effort. I know it's a busy day but often someone will ask if there's anything they can do to help. I say, take up that offer! In this recipe the red hots are what drew my attention. I do like it though.

Hey, Angela, what a great dish. It was wonderful! However, when I baked it, it never turned into candied YAMS; it went into the oven as sweet potatoes and came out as candied SWEET POTATOES. What did I do wrong? All joking aside, yams are not sweet potatoes and sweet potatoes can never be yams. You can get sweet potatoes grown in the US but yams never grow in the US. They come from South America. So it may be good idea to change the name of this recipe to 'Candied Sweet Potatoes' and not perpetuate misinformation. Despite the fact that my sweet potatoes did not turn into yams, it was absolutely fabulous!

I just want to thank Angie for this receipe! I made a dish similar to this one last year and couldn't find it. I didn't use red hots, but used pecans instead and was so happy to find this on the internet. I'm having Dillon's "cater" the meal this year and thought this would be great for those of us that want delicious sweet potatoes with minimal effort! Thanks again, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone!

I was looking for a easy candied yams recipe and this was very easy and excellent. The red hots really made it. The only thing I changed was I added pecans.

Thank you! This is the recipe that used to be on the back of the can and they changed it. You are the only person who has it. I would have died if I couldn't make this for the kids. It's been a tradition since I was a kid.

Thanks for the help, Angie! I only make these once or twice a year and couldn't remember exactly what made them so good. Getting old, I guess! I totally forgot about the butter. I just love the internet where all of our "E" buddies can share. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Carol

Add cut up apples as well. You won't be sorry. Been using the canned yams for quite few years now, they're awesome. All other recipes call for much more butter, I'm with you, it's not necessary. The easier, the better.... Happy Thanksgiving!

If you want an easy way to make these try wrapping the unpeeled potatoes in foil and bake in oven until they are tender. This I do the day before Thanksgiving. Peel and slice. I make the sauce in a separate pan by draining juice from can of crushed pineapple, add brown sugar, cinnamon, other things you like the taste of. I like maple syrup in it or you could use corn syrup. This makes the syrup stick to the sweet potatoes. Add marshmellows and let them melt, pour over sliced sweet potatoes and heat through, there aren't any left after dinner.

This recipe sounds good but like others I am curious about the red hots, I am thinking this is just like cinnamon flavor? Do the red hots melt and are unnoticeable because I am sure if my husband saw a red hot he probably wouldn't try it.. Anyway I love pecans and wanted to include them so anyone who has added those as well as red hots how did it taste... Yummy?

This is the first time ever I have seen a recipe similar to how my mom and grandmother made candied yams! We used canned yams drained, maple syrup, cinnamon bits, bake. Add as many marshmallow as container will hold, put back in oven to melt and brown marshmallows. The sauce makes yummy gravy for the turkey too!
