In a skillet melt 3 tablespoons butter. Add 2 medium onions, chopped, 1 pound fresh mushrooms, chopped and 2 green peppers, chopped. Saute about 5 minutes until vegetables are tender. Set aside.
Trim crusts from 12 slices of bread. (Any type of bread will do, day old is good and so is French bread.) Lay 6 slices of bread on the bottom of a 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Make alternate layers of cheese, (2 cups), 1 pound shredded ham and vegetables that have been set aside. Repeat layers including bread, and top with cheese.
In a large bowl, beat 8 eggs, 3 cups of milk, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.
Pour the egg mixture over the layers in the baking dish. Be sure to cover all edges and corners. Cover with aluminum foil. Next Day: Check for dry spots and add more milk and egg if necessary. Remove foil to bake. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes. Puff rises as it bakes. Cut into squares to serve. Serves 8-10.
