SAUSAGE AND BEAN SOUP 
1 c. dried chick peas
4 c. water

Place in a large saucepan. Cover and boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand for 1 hour.

1 lb. Polish or Portuguese sausage, thinly sliced
1/2 lb. ham, diced
6 strips bacon, diced
2 onions, chopped
2 tsp. salt
4 c. water

Add to saucepan. Cover and heat to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours or until chick peas are tender. Add 2 large potatoes, cut into cubes, and simmer 20 minutes. Add 2 cups shredded cabbage and simmer 10 minutes more. Makes about 8 servings.
