1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
2 c. applesauce mixed with 2 tsp. baking soda
3 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
Raisins, dates or nuts (opt.)

Mix shortening, brown sugar and eggs. Add applesauce mixed with baking soda. Blend in flour, cloves, cinnamon and salt. To this mixture you may add raisins, dates or nuts as desired. Bake in greased tube pan at 325 degrees until done.
