1 1/2 c. dates (chopped)
1 c. water
2 eggs, beaten
2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
3 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. soft butter
1 3/4 c. hot coffee
1 c. chopped walnuts
1 tsp. vanilla
Topping

Place dates in large bowl; cover with hot water. Let stand for several minutes. Add eggs, sugar and salt; mix well. Mix nuts with flour until coated. Add to date mixture. Stir in hot coffee, vanilla, soda, baking powder and soft butter.

Pour into greased 9x13 inch pan. Bake in moderate 350 degree oven for 40 minutes to 1 hour. Remove from heat; sprinkle with topping: 2/3 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup butter. Mix topping until crumbly.
