BEEF STEW 
1 1/2 to 2 lbs. beef stew
1 tbsp. butter
1 lg. onion, slivered or 1 pkg. (8 oz.) tiny whole onions
1 c. undiluted canned beef consomme
3 carrots
3 parsnips
4 stalks celery
8 to 10 whole white peppercorn
2 bay leaves

Cut meat into chunks. Brown meat, place in casserole dish when browned. Add onion and beef consomme. Heat to boiling and add spices, cover with lid. Braise meat for about 1 hour. Add carrots, parsnip and celery. Simmer for another 30 to 40 minutes (don't over cook).
