FRANCES SUMRALL'S POPCORN BALLS 
5 qts. popped corn
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. water
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. light corn syrup
1 tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Red & green food coloring

Keep popcorn hot and crisp in slow oven, 300 to 325 degrees. Cook sugar, water, salt and corn syrup to very hard ball stage, 256 degrees. Add vinegar, vanilla and food coloring. Cook to light crack stage, 270 degrees. Pour slowly over popcorn, mix well to coat every kernel. Press in balls. Use fat on hands if necessary. Makes 20 popcorn balls.
