THE BEST SUGAR COOKIES 
3/4 c. butter, softened (must use butter for best taste)
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 c. flour (a little more if needed)
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
2 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter, gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Beat in egg. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk and vanilla to form stiff dough. Divide dough into four portions and wrap each in plastic wrap. Chill 1 hour or more. On a floured surface, roll out the dough until 3/16 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes. Bake at 350 degrees until lightly browned. Remove after a few minutes on wire rack to cool. Can decorate or leave plain. Makes about 3 dozen.
