HEALTHY CAT TREATS
All amounts are approximate, I always improvise.

one large can of salmon, including bones
4 or 5 lumps of frozen spinach
a few strawberries (blueberries are also good)
2 tbsp ground flax
1 oz. almonds (walnuts or pecans are also good)
3/4 cup corn meal
1/4 cup olive oil (canola is okay)
1/8 cup water (if necessary)

Blend everything except the corn meal. You may need to add some water to make the blender work better.

For a low carb, high omega-3 supplement, you can feed an ounce or so of this goop to your cat once a day while reducing the amount of dry food you feed it (this only works if the cat likes to "lick" its food). If your cats are not overweight or only like food they can hold on to and chew, read on.

Pour the puree into a bowl, stir in the corn meal, adding until very thick. Take a small amount and press firmly between your thumb and index of each hand. Repeat until all is used up, placing the treats on a bake tray. Should make over 200. Place into oven at around 100 C (about 225°F.) for 15 minutes or until hard and dry.

Keep in a resealable bag in the fridge. Feed them to your cat at will since they are a nutritional supplement!

They are an excellent source of omega-3 polyunsaturates, lignans, antioxidants, and calcium. The fibre also helps to gently pass hairballs. If your cat has hairball problems, try adding more ground flax.

Remember, your cat needs many things not found in high amounts in these treats, such as taurine and lots of omega-6 fatty acids - this isn't a replacement diet.
