2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. butter
1 c. granulated light or dark brown sugar
1 egg
2 tsp. vanilla

Sift flour with salt and baking soda and set aside. With rotary beater or electric mixer cream butter, sugar, egg and vanilla until light and fluffy. Slowly mix in dry ingredients; shape dough into a roll about 2 inches in diameter; wrap in foil or plastic food wrap and chill several hours or overnight.
