AMISH OATMEAL COOKIES 
1 c. raisins
1/3 c. peanuts
2 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
3/4 to 1 c. raw oatmeal
2 tsp. baking soda
1/3 c. sour milk, add 1 tbsp. lemon juice to 1/3 c. milk, let sit while making cookies
3 tbsp. dark molasses
1 egg, beaten
1 egg, for topping

Grind raisins and peanuts. Combine flour, baking powder, spices and salt; cut in shortening. Add sugar, oatmeal, raisins and peanuts; mix well. Dissolve baking soda in sour milk; add to dry ingredients. Combine and add molasses and 1 beaten egg. Refrigerate 1 hour. Shape dough into walnut-size balls on greased cookie sheet. Press down slightly with fork. Beat 1 egg and paint tops of the cookies. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Makes about 8 dozen.
