FROSTED APPLE SQUARES | |
PASTRY: 2 1/2 c. flour 1 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 c. shortening 1 egg plus milk to make 2/3 c. FILLING: 5 c. chopped apple 1/4 c. sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. allspice FROSTING: 1 c. confectioners' sugar 2 tbsp. lemon juice Combine flour, sugar and salt. Cut in shortening and stir in egg and milk. Divide dough in half and roll out each half to a 12x10 inch piece. Place one on a cookie sheet. Spread apples, combined with sugar and spices, over the dough. Place second pastry on top and seal edges. Brush with beaten egg white. Bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes. Combine frosting ingredients and drizzle over pastry while still hot. Cut into 16 to 20 squares and serve warm. |
