OLD FASHIONED OATMEAL COOKIES 
1 c. seedless raisins
1 c. water
3/4 c. soft shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 c. rolled oats
1/2 c. chopped nuts (opt.)

Simmer raisins and water over low heat until raisins are plump, drain raisin liquid into 1/2 cup measuring cup. Add water to fill the 1/2 cup. Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Stir in raisin liquid. Measure flour, baking powder, soda, salt and spices and blend together. Stir into batter, add raisins, nuts and oatmeal. Drop by teaspoon on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 6 to 7 dozen.
