OLD TIME STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE 
6 c. fresh strawberries, sliced
1/4 c. sugar
2 c. all purpose flour
2 tbsp. sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening
3/4 c. milk
1 tbsp. butter, melted
1/4 c. sugar
1 c. whipping cream
2 tbsp. sugar

Heat oven to 450 degrees. Stir together strawberries and sugar; set aside. Grease round pan, 9 x 1 1/2 inches. Mix flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, the baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Stir in milk. Spread in pan, brush with butter.

Sprinkle with sugar. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Remove from pan; cool slightly. Split shortcake until soft peaks form. Fill layers with half the whipped cream and strawberries. Top with remaining whipped cream and berries. 6 to 8 servings.
