CHAYOTE
The Chayote looks a little like a gourd. it is a pale green color, the outside is a little rough and is about the size and shape of a pear. In fact it is sometimes called a Vegetable Pear. In other places it is called a Mango Squash, and in Brazil it is the Chuchu. They are grown in South America, Mexico, Algeria, Africa, the West Indies and in Florida, United States. It can be used in many different ways, raw and cooked salads, pickled, in soups, as a main dish, in breads, cakes, and desserts. It is usually eaten peeled and the one seed in the center should be removed. If it is very tender, it can be used unpeeled with the seed.
