RED VELVET CAKE 
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 eggs
2 1/4 c. sifted flour
2 oz. red food coloring
1 scant tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. vinegar

Make paste of red food coloring and cocoa. Add salt and buttermilk slowly, mixing well. Set aside. Cream butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla with mixer. Beat well. Blend in red paste mixture alternating with flour. Last blend n soda and vinegar; mix together well. Bake in two 9 inch pans at 350 degrees for 30 minutes until done. Cool and then split layers, making 4 layers.
