BREAD & BUTTER PICKLES 
1 gal. cucumbers
A few sm. white onions
1/2 c. salt
2 tsp. turmeric
4 to 5 c. sugar
1 tsp. celery seed
2 tbsp. white mustard seed
Vinegar as needed

Slice cucumbers and onions, place a layer of each salt and ice until the full amount has been used. Place a layer of crushed ice on top, let stand 3 hours in covered vessel. Drain. Place in a large cooking vessel. Spread sugar and spices over top. Add vinegar until it covers cucumbers, it dissolves sugar as vinegar is added.

As soon as mixture comes to a boil pack into jars, filling top with hot vinegar syrup.
