BARLEY HOT DISH 
3/4 c. barley
1 lb. ground beef
1 med. or lg. onion, diced
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. shortening
2 c. celery, diced
1 green pepper, diced
1 c. (or 4 oz. can) mushrooms
2 (1 lb.) cans tomatoes
1 (1 lb.) can peas (with juice)
1 sm. can tomato juice

Cook barley in 4 cups water with 1 teaspoon of salt until tender; drain. Brown beef with onion. Add mushrooms, peas, celery, green pepper, tomatoes, and juice. Add salt to taste. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
