1 c. butter, softened
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In large bowl of electric mixer, at medium speed, cream butter with sugar and egg until light and fluffy. sift flour with salt, baking soda and cream of tartar right into bowl. Beat at low speed until well combined; beat in vanilla. Drop by rounded teaspoon onto ungreased cookie sheet. Dip bottom of glass in sugar and press cookies to flatten slightly. Bake 8-10 minutes until golden. Cool on wire rack. Makes 4 dozen.
