SENATE BEAN SOUP 
1 lb. dried beans (Navy, pea or Great Northern)
Ham bone with some meat on it
3 med. potatoes, cooked & mashed
1 c. chopped onion
1 c. diced celery
2 cloves minced garlic
Salt & pepper to taste

Wash beans and soak overnight in a large kettle. Next morning, add enough water to make 5 quarts. Add ham bone and simmer about 2 hours or until beans begin to mush. Add potatoes, celery, onion and garlic. Simmer about 1 hour. Remove ham bone and chop ham and return to soup. Season to taste. Makes about 4 1/2 quarts of soup.
