DARK DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 
2 c. flour
1 3/4 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 3/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. cocoa
2/3 c. shortening
1 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs (1/2 - 2/3 c.)

Sift dry ingredients into bowl. Add shortening and water. Beat 2 minutes on medium speed with electric mixer. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl constantly. Add vanilla and eggs. Beat 2 minutes, scraping bowl constantly.

Pour in lightly greased and floured 9"x13"x2" or 3 (9") round cake Pyrex dishes. (NO METAL PANS.) Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. This is excellent with Fudge Icing.

FUDGE ICING:

2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. cocoa (or a little less)
1/4 lb. butter (1 stick butter)

On stove, blend sugar and cocoa. Add milk and cook and stir until it begins to boil. Boil exactly 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla (do NOT stir). Let cool approximately 25 minutes or until lukewarm. Then beat until it gets quite thick.
