TOASTED SPICE CAKE 
3/4 c. Crisco
2 c. brown sugar, sifted
2 eggs, separated
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/4 c. sour milk
2 1/3 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Blend Crisco with sugar and egg yolks in one brisk beating. Dissolve soda in sour milk. Add milk alternately with all sifted dry ingredients. Add vanilla. Mix until smooth.

Pour into a greased and floured shallow pan (8x12). Then spread batter with -

BROWN SUGAR MERINGUE:

Beat 2 egg whites (left from cake) until they hold a point but are not dry. Slowly add 1 cup of light brown sugar and continue beating until smooth. Spread over raw cake batter. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of broken nut meats. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) for 45-50 minutes.
