2 c. flour 1 tbsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. shortening Fat for frying Sift together flour, baking powder and salt; cut in shortening. Gradually add 2/3 cups lukewarm water, stirring with fork (dough will be crumbly). On lightly floured surface, knead until a smooth ball is formed. Divide in half; let stand 10 minutes. Roll each half to 12 1/2 by 10 inch rectangle. Cut in 2 1/2 inch squares. Do not reroll. Fry 3 or 4 at a time in deep hot fat (400 F.) about 30 seconds on each side. Drain on paper toweling. If desired roll in mixture of 1 cup sugar and 4 teaspoons cinnamon or simply serve with honey while warm. Makes 40. |
