SUGAR COOKIES 
1 c. butter, softened
1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. almond extract
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
Sugar crystals (optional)
Buttercream Frosting (optional)
Assorted candies/sprinkles (optional)

FROSTING:

3 tbsp. butter, softened
2 1/3 c. powdered sugar
1 1/2 - 2 tbsp. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Paste food coloring (optional)

Cream butter; gradually add sugar, beating at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add egg and flavorings; beat well.

Combine flour, soda and cream of tartar; add to creamed mixture, beating well. (Dough will be soft.)

Cover and chill 3 hours. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness on lightly floured surface. Cut out with cookie cutters. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Cool; frost (decorate as desired). Yield: 4 dozen.

Frosting: Cream butter, gradually add sugar, beating well with mixer. Add milk and vanilla; color as desired. Yield: 1 cup.
