POTASH SOAP | |
1 can of lye 4 lbs. grease 10 qts. water 1 c. turpentine 1 tbsp. of any kind of washing powder You take the old grease from the kitchen, it is best to strain off or drain off, so there won't be too much settlings in it. The turpentine is to keep the worms out, and the washing powder makes it suds better. This soap is cooked in an iron wash pot and heated with wood. Cooking time takes 1 hour. Cook all this slowly, adding a 1 quart of water at the time until the soap thickens. The soap is left in the pot to thicken. Then cut into squares. When testing to see if the soap has cooked enough; get a chicken feather, stick it in the pot and shake it. If the feathers are eaten off and just the stem left; the soap is ready. This soap makes the clothes smell fresh after being hung out in the sun. |
