2 c. sugar
2 c. hot water
2/3 c. shortening (Crisco)
2 c. raisins
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. chopped pecans (optional)

Mix together in saucepan on stove, stirring slowly. Let come to boil 3 minutes. Then add 2 teaspoons soda dissolved in a little warm water. Let mixture cool to lukewarm. Add 4 cups flour and 2 teaspoons baking powder. Pour into baking dish or pan 13x9x2 or 2 square pans. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.
