WALNUT GEMS 
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt

TOPPING:

1 c. ground nuts
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. sour cream (I prefer black walnuts)

Beat sugar and shortening. Add vanilla and beaten egg. Add soda, salt and flour. Make round balls 1 inch spread. With thumb, make hole in center and add 1 teaspoon topping mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-14 minutes on a greased cookie sheet. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen cookies.
