GRANDMOTHER DORA'S POPPY SEED
COOKIES
 
3 c. flour
1 c. shortening
1 tsp. salt
1/4 lb. whole poppy seed (approximately 1 c.)
1 1/4 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

Mix shortening with flour. Add remaining ingredients. This will be a sticky mixture; refrigerate 1/2 hour. Work with small portions at a time. Flour work surface. Flour rolling pin or put waxed paper over dough to prevent sticking. Roll out thin. Cut out rounds (a drinking glass, dipped in flour, does nicely). Place on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees until lightly browned. Makes many (I've never counted). You may cut the amount of sugar in this recipe by up to 1/2.
